Sweetpea’s Garden

Yes, this week it’s pictures of the Capitol, which — along with the White House — is about as non-local as it gets here in DC. However, because I live on Capitol Hill, it is a place I see every day. Last weekend, though, I got a new perspective on it, one that I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have gotten if I didn’t live here. I went to a fundraiser for the school friends’ children attend, and it was held on the roof deck of a law firm with the lovely view pictured below.

DC has no shortage of sculpture — from monuments & memorials to art museums & galleries, it seems to be everywhere. This doesn’t stop people from creating little sculpture gardens of their own, though. Today’s photos were both taken within a few blocks of my apartment, and are just a couple that I particulaly like. There’s one I really love over by Eastern Market, but I didn’t get a chance to go take a picture of it. I may try to swing by over the weekend and if I do, I’ll add it here.

The folk-art chicken below belongs to a friend/colleague who lives around the corner. Her adolescent daughter finds it embarrassing, which Lori deals with by making it even more noticeable by adding accessories for holidays — it sported a lovely Star of David garland for Hanukkah, for example.

On my way to the Metro the other morning, I noticed how much the fallen cherry blossom petals on this stretch of sidewalk resembled a dusting of snow, only prettier. It’s almost as slippery, though. It’s been rainy, and wet petals on brick gets pretty slick.
