That I am a bit of a geeky girl is pretty clear: I work on the web, love history, buy fun tech toys, knit… hell, I even just bough a Mac. I do, however, have some holes in my geek credibility. My lack of love for sci-fi/fantasy is one (small doses only, please), my disinterest in comics (the tv program Heroes being the exception) is another, and the fact that I am, in no way a gamer (it’s just not in my skill set) is a third. This weekend, though, I bought something that might help — at least a little — with that last point.
Yep, I bought a Wii.
On Thanksgiving, we spent a good chunk of the evening playing out at my brother’s place. We had a family bowling tournament, played some golf, and then bowled some more. It was a ton of fun, and not the boring, sit-on-your-butt kind of video games that those of us from the Atari generation are used to playing. I also got to try out my sister-in-law’s WiiFit, and discovered something I never expected: a way of exercising that didn’t entirely suck — that was, in fact, pretty fun. And, given that I am at an age where I should be working out in order to stay healthy, it seemed like a good way to get started.
I have to admit, I decided then that I really wanted one, but didn’t think I would end up getting one so soon. It turned out, though, that when I went to BestBuy on Saturday to buy a hard drive, I found a huge stack of them right inside the front door. Knowing that they’re a hot — and fairly scarce — commodity this time of year, I decided to grab one. I set it up last night, and actually got up this morning and did a bunch of little exercises. I got out of bed a half-hour early to do it, which for me is definitely a sign that I like it.
I still kind of doubt that having a Wii will turn me into a gamer, but seriously, anything that encourages me to get out of bed in the morning is a good thing to have around.
